Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication once the closure began. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
